Krčko maslinovo ulje, the famous olive oil from Krk island has recently received the geographical protection status from the European Union. The oil is now among the few Croatian product that have a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). The olives that grow on Krk are known to produce oil with a high content of oleic acid and polyphenols which protect the oil from spoiling and give it a fresh aroma. Krčko maslinovo ulje is exculisvely produced on the island of Krk and on some smaller neighbouring islands which belong to the administravtive boundaries of the local government.
