Luxury of freedom

The history of yodeling in Styria

In 1893 a treasure of rural culture and its way of life was discovered when various Styrian cries and yodels were collected together to create a cornucopia of Austrian musicality. This ancient and artistic form of art influenced such composers as Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and Ernst Krenek.

Yodeling is one of the oldest forms of communication and it is used especially in mountain areas and across the valleys – being also one of the loudest ways to communicate. The particularly high and penetrating sounds allows the yodeler to overcome large distances. Yodeling will catch the listeners’ attention as well as the cattle’s. The Austrian musician Hubert von Goisern combines folk music with genres such as blues, jazz and pop. Goisern has been the trendsetter for alpine rock and has come to be known as the “yodelling rocker”.
