The Mureș Nature Sciences Museum will become the second one in the country, size and patrimony wise, after its refurbishment, the museum’s director, Soos Zoltan, said. The Antipa Museum in Bucharest is the largest in Romania. The Mureș Museum will be revamped with EU funds, in a project worth RON 11.2 million (EUR 2.48 million), out of which over RON 9.2 million (EUR 2 million) are non-refundable.
“This building, which was finalized in 1894, was meant as a museum from the very beginning. It owns over 70,000 objects that are extremely valuable at a national level. After the revamping, it will be in the second place nationally, after the Antipa Museum,” Soos Zoltan said.
After the revamping, the museum is set to have, within the next two years, a bat cave, sensorial alleys, therapeutic gardens, and new exhibits, including exotic marine and terrestrial species and plants. The museum’s building will be refurbished, as well as its sculptures, decorative elements, and the woodwork. The utility networks will be replaced, platforms for people with disabilities will be added, and the building will be lit architecturally. The museum will also purchase the needed furniture to keep the microclimate requires for the exhibits, and will set up a greenhouse for exotic plants.
The building of the Mureș Nature Sciences Museum was erected in a Neo-classical style, with Greek and Renaissance elements, after the designs of Kiss István. In 1931 collector Aurel Filimon proposed the establishment of a nature science museum, based on his personal collection. Most of it was lost during the War World II and the building hosted a boarding school until 1957. In 1968 it became a museum again, and it hosts the Nature Sciences Museum since 1988.
