10 culinary experiences in Bela Krajina you have to have!

All the travellers know good food is the one you fall in love with the first bite. I know it may sound obvious, but I’ll explain!

Normally, the outstanding food, the one that gets food lovers surprised by, is not the famous and expensive one, but the one made locally with fresh ingredients, traditional techniques and served in a comfy place in the company of people you like - all of which you will easily find in Slovenia.


The idea of this article is not only affirming Slovenian food is good, although it is, but to give tips on what to try when visiting Bela Krajina, through the lenses of blogger Maria Stoyanova, who described very well the Slovenian taste in her blog post When in Slovenia: 10 culinary experiences to have in Bela Krajina

What about preparing a Slovenian pogača yourself?

Here is the full recipe for the traditional pogača:

INGREDIENTS

● 1 cup of water
● 1,5 packages dry yeast
● 2 tbs sugar
● 3 tbs oil
● 1 egg
● 3,5 cups flour
● 1 extra egg
● Cumin
● Salt

HOW TO MAKE IT?

1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C.
2. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add sugar, oil and eggs.
3. Stir in flour until combined and soft dough forms.
4. Place dough in another bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled. 2-3 hours.
5. Roll on floured board into large. Make a circle.
6. Cut crossed lines with a knife through the bread.
7. Brush top with oil/butter and egg mixture. Let sit 20 minutes.
8. Spread cumin seeds and salt crystals over the traditional Slovenian bread.
9. Bake for 30 minutes, or until lightly browned.
