Domača obrt Cvitkovič
The main activity of “Domača obrt Cvitkovič” is the fabrication of linen in the exact same way as it was produced centuries ago. They are not focused on quantity but on this really special old fashioned production. Mrs. Cvitkovič is one of a few traditional linen makers in Slovenia. She plants the linen plant on her property, later picks it by hand, process it using only traditional and natural methods (using river Kolpa, sun and special traditional tools). The thread is then woven into a linen fabric with an ancient wooden machine. The fabric is later bleached in the summer sun so it gets the recognizable white color of the Bela krajina folklore dress. The last stage is decorating the fabric with a red thread, using a needle to weave the traditional slavic patterns.
They are also producing typical traditional Easter eggs of Bela krajina, called “Pisanice”, which are specially decorated in connection with this region. Those eggs used to only be connected with Easter, but by now they are a souvenir and are produced during the whole year. They are typical exactly for the village of Adlešiči and are registered at the Register of Immoveable Cultural Heritage since 2012. Mrs. Nada Cvitkovič was the main character in the cooperation with the Etnographic Museum in the process of the registration. The Easter eggs (“Pisanice”) are always colored in white, red and black and should be done in two stages. First the part which is supposed to be white is covered in bees wax. The wax is applied with a special writing tool, called "pisalka". The "Pisalka" contains the wax which warms up and melts over a candle and then can be applied as a first layer of wax. After, the egg is dyed in red textile coloring. Now, the secon layer of wax, which will be red in the end, can be applied. The egg is then dyed in black textile color. After the coloring process, the lines of the wax are melted in warm water and the eggs are finished and show the beautiful traditional patterns of Bela krajina.
