Mind Reader

Marcus was an ordinary teenage boy in high-school. He was one of those fashion guys that were surrounded by lots of people, wearing the best clothes and having a bunch of non-school activities. His father was a trader and was traveling a lot. Marcus had mixed feelings about this, it was not good his dad was away most of the time, but on the other hand, he was bringing him so many gifts and cool stuff from abroad, it was great. This time, his dad was coming back from some old village in abroad. The bag of presents was smaller than usual and that caused Marcus to feel left behind a bit. “I know it looks as if I don’t bring you anything cool, but it is not like that. Look at this berry button; I got it from an old man during the trip. It’s purple, as the rarest and sublime color in nature. It symbolizes the humans’ comfort and health. This button helps reading people’s minds, they told me.” His father explained to him that he should hold it in his hand and talk to the person whose mind he wants to read, for this to work.

Marcus did not believe the story at first but decided to try it out anyway. Next day he went to school and got a conversation with the girl he liked. He never knew why, but most of the time she was shying away from him or snapping quickly. They started talking and as he took the button in his hand, he read her thoughts: “Wow, he is really handsome. But I can’t say that he will laugh at me”.

Marcus smiled at himself and quickly changed the topic. His confidence raised and somehow it all seemed easier from now on. And it was not about being able to read minds…it was that we never knew who might actually love us, even if they show otherwise.
