Luxury of freedom

Wörthersee

A day spent exploring Wörthersee, the 20-kilometer-by-two-kilometer lake connecting Klagenfurt to Velden, is a day well spent. Surrounded by steep, heavily wooded alpine foothills with stunning views of the distant snow-capped Alps, this lake is famous for its warm Caribbean-clear turquoise waters (come summer, water temperatures reach 25°C). The lake is popular with boating enthusiasts, sunbathers, and fishermen in summer, while a number of golf courses and horse riding establishments also draw sports enthusiasts (the lake freezes over in winter and is popular for skating). For those looking for the best views, visit the spectacular Pyramidenkogel Observation Tower in Keutschach, the world's tallest wooden lookout tower. Perched at an altitude of 920 meters, the 51-meter-high tower also offers a thrilling slide ride back down to ground level.
