Luxury of freedom

Old Market

The "Alter Markt,"  also known as Old Marketplace, was laid out as an urban trading center during the 13th century. It is located in Salzburg’s old city centre and takes up a major role in the attractions part of the city. Between 1873 and 1927 the square was under the name of Ludwig Victor Square, named after Archduke Ludwig Viktor. He was the youngest brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I, who moved to Klessheim Palace.

The market’s division varies - a dairy one, a cabbage, herbs and the stove fitters' market take place. The square is surrounded by a number of stately burgher's houses, whose core dates back to the time of the Middle Age.

Except as a weekly market, the place was also used as a festive setting for the Whitsun dance - the sword dance by the Dürrnberg miners.
