The Dwarf Garden of Salzburg

In the very heart of Salzburg, in the Small Bastion Garden, visitors can see some very unique little dwarf statues made from white marble. The famous statues of the Salzburg Dwarf Garden go all the way back to the 17th century: they are derived from caricatures originally made in copper by French draftsman and artist Jacques Callot. During 2017 and 2018 these dwarfs were taken away and given a fresh look, and now they are back in their own garden for visitors to discover.

Originally, the Dwarf Garden was populated by 28 different little characters. Nowadays, they only number 15, each of them with unique personalities. There is for example the dwarf with a spade, who is a hard-working gardener. He symbolizes the month of March, when the garden work traditionally begins. Two dwarfs at the bridge leading to the Bastion Garden are engaged in a popular Renaissance game called Pallone, showing a glimpse of the old times spare time activities.
