Luxury of freedom

Robert Musil literature museum in Klagenfurt

The house in which Robert Musil (1880 – 1942), the world-ranking Austrian writer and classic of the modern period, was born works nowadays as a museum. The house was built in 1867 and is now owned by the provincial capital Klagenfurt. Since 1994, the house has been the home for a modern literature centre and the Robert Musil Institute for Literature Research of the University of Klagenfurt.

The Literature Museum presents permanent exhibitions about Robert Musil, Christine Lavant and Ingeborg Bachmann. The museum is truly an impressive landmark in the city with its spray-painted portraits of each author around the entrance of the building.
