Luxury of freedom

BIG BERRY PEOPLE

Meet Pekmezmed, our first fairy from Art Colony

We talked with the artist Pekmezmed from Rijeka and it was the chance to get to know her better so we asked her some questions about nature and her experience at BIG BERRY

My idea of freedom is doing what makes me happy (I know it sounds like a dumb answer but it's the truth for me).
My favourite nature related movie is an animated movie "The man who planted trees". It's about a man who plants trees and the simplicity of it is what makes it a great story.
I decided to be a part of this project because I liked the idea of being in the nature while working. It's a nice opportunity for artists to work and in the same time enjoy this wonderful Kolpa river banks.
My perfect place to live isn't a specific place or country. I would love to live in nature and to be independent and live in a sustainable house that has its own water source and electricity but I would also like it to be somewhere around people or at least close to people.
I'm sure I will remember my experience in BIG BERRY because it's very beautiful here. There are a lot of people and artists that I already know from before so it's really nice to see them again and spend time together but also meet new people and new creatives they are here on the art colony. The plus side is that we get to stay in these beautiful houses and enjoy the nature here in BIG BERRY.
The songs that give me inspiration are the songs from one of my favourite bands ever called Fleet Foxes. Their last album is really beautiful and when I'm listening to it I feel like I'm travelling.
One of my biggest art adventurers was travelling to Montenegro for a festival called "Sinestezija". I was travelling with two people that are actually here on this art colony- Ninja Tiger and Tifanyi Rubi and we got the chance to do a whole Balkan tour and it gave us the opportunity to do what we love- draw murals and travel at the same time so we got the chance to see all these different places that some of us never saw before so it was really nice.
My philosophy of art is all about self-expression. I don't think that art should be about politics or other not so beautiful things but about finding the beauty in us and around us. That kind of art makes other people reflect about their life as well.
The tool that I mostly use in my artistic expression is a plain old pencil. Sometimes I use brushes ( like when I'm painting a mural) but I mostly enjoy simple drawing and the feeling of a pencil gliding across paper.
My favourite artist... that's a tough one I don't know why but it's always hard to name a favourite artist. On the top of my head I really enjoy illustrations made by a couple that work under the name Apak studio. Their illustrations are a bit childlike but have that special something. It is different from the stuff that I do but I guess that's why I like it so much. There are a ton of artists that I really enjoy both contemporary and old/ traditional but that story would be too long to tell.
