Not only was the movie filmed in and around the city, the real Von Trapp family also had their roots in Salzburg. Directed by Robert Wise and starred by Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, the movie brought Von Trapp family’s story to audiences all over the world. Having received five Oscars, The Sound of Music is one of the most successful productions in the cinematic history.
The city of Salzburg is known as the world’s most visited movie site as every year more than 300 000 visitors travel to see the shooting locations of the movie as well as the real landmarks of the Von Trapp family. Visitors can relive the scenes from the movie at Mirabell Gardens or Leopoldskron palace and true fans can take a tour of the real Trapp family home or even book a room to spend the night!
There are countless activities in Salzburg for the fans of Sound of Music: guided sightseeing tours, concerts, marionette theatre shows and even cooking lessons. Soon will also open a museum dedicated entirely to The Sound of Music.
