Sayaka Ganz - Reclaiming others' trash as her own creation

Sayaka Ganz is an artist working to revise the trash of others and create pieces of art from used plastic. When you first look at her art, the viewer sees an animal in a state of motion. In these examples, a horse galloping from a gallery wall, a whale swimming to the surface of the sea, and a seagull flying through the sky. The artist states, "I want to share the imagination of what it might feel like to gallop like a horse and feel the wind going through my mane, or to swim like a dolphin and feel the water and sunlight against my fins". Every sculpture captures the essence of movement perfect. You almost expect the animal to continue its swim or flight. Yet, upon closer inspection, you begin to see the details within the animals: A once used iPod earbud, plastic spoons and forks, combs, and pieces of plastic sunglasses.

Ganz calls her style of art “3D Impressionism”. When the viewers get up close to these sculpture, you begin recognizing some of the items they're made of. You may even wonder if you have the same plastic kitchen items at home or other objects in your purse. Upon further inspection viewers may notice that many of the objects are stained or bent, because these are all second hand items bought from thrift stores and collected from friends and family. The artists comments, "I use plastic objects like brush strokes in a painting by Van Gogh. The plastic items are my collaborators, and they inform the aesthetic decisions I make as well as educate me about environmental issues". Here at BIG BERRY we are also concerned with sustainability and pride ourselves on building our mobile homes with sustainably made materials. It's artists like Ganz that make us wonder how we can continue to live and create a more sustainable luxury experience.
