Matko Meštrovic gets inspiration from everything around him
Matko Meštrovic is a photographer from Bjelovar, Croatia, who describes himself as a creative, different and most of all a determined photographer. Before discovering his passion, Matko had a go at many different sport activities and in the field of music. However, none of these hobbies really felt like something he could stick with. Matko felt lost struggling to find something to occupy him for a longer time, until one day his parents suggested photography and sent him to a photography club mentored by Zlata Medak. In that club, Matko got his first important lesson about taking photos and learned everything about camera obscura, which taught him to appreciate photography as a whole.
Professionality comes from within
Matko believes that professionality is not measured by one’s expensive professional gear, but rather by what they can do with it. Many of the famous artists work with self-made cameras or cameras bought from the dollar store. “For me, the value of the camera is not measured by the numbers on the price tag, but by the person standing behind it”, he says. At the moment, to find his own style, he is still perfecting all the different photographing techniques to create something unique.
When it comes to creating art, Matko is influenced by everything that surrounds him. What holds the best art of all is nature, which works as the biggest source of inspiration to him. According to him, the purpose of art is for each person to interpret it in their own way, and that way there is no right or wrong.
Learn how to look at the world
The one thing Matko is the most proud of is the possibility to see the world in a different light, finding meaning in everything he sees and knowing how to use that to produce the best photographs. That is an important part of the profession, and that is why Matko wants to give it as an advice to all beginner photographers: “Start with learning how to look. With that done, you’re a rough diamond. Then you just need to practice and perfect your skills”. With a bit of creativity, you can be the best of who you are. And yet it is good to remember, that like in the real world, also in art and photography a perfection doesn’t exist.
Other than photography, Matko tries to be passionate about as many things as possible. He really values time spent in nature and connecting with it. Luckily as part of his profession, Matko gets to travel a lot. He has visited many photography workshops in Croatia learning about the cultural heritage and all the hidden beauties of the country: “The most interesting of all were the untouched landscapes of Gorski Kotar where you can find a bear hidden behind every tree.”
Learning about BIG BERRY
In BIG BERRY and with the BBteam Matko spent countless hours during various events, already from the first year that Kolpa River Resort opened. While staying in the resort, he was open to help around organization of the events, planning or even cleaning. He soon became a friend and amazing external colleague to everybody in the team. It was a pleasure to learn and work with him.
“I love working with BIG BERRY because they are open to new experiences regarding photography and various other fields”, he says.
